The One with the Shim Shams

I have a friend that plays bass guitar/guitar in a band called the Shim Shams. They perform at alot of different places around Austin, and last night I went to see them at Trophy's, a sort of dive bar on South Congress. I am not one of those people that can wax poetic about music like a Rolling Stone writer, so I will tell you that one of my friends says their sound has a Talking Heads influence. If you check out their site, they describe their music as Garage-Pop Rock-adelic, and they do list Talking Heads as an influence. Personally, I would describe them as Punk Rock, and I like them alot. Also, go here to listen to some of their songs. They all have characters that they play when they are perfroming, and one of the songs is named for my friend's character, Candypants Larue.
On a different topic, last night reminded me just how painfully mainstream I am. Last night, I wore my Seven jeans, a Gap sweater, some Nine West heels, and I was carrying my pride and joy, my Fendi purse. I walk in, and everyone there was dressed either in a grunge or a rockabilly look. I'm sure they all bought their clothes at trendy vintage stores. I just can't pull this off. At least, I like to drink Lone Star, which seemed to be the perferred drink of most everyone there. Even most of my music tastes are so mainstream. I like pretty much everything from Kelly Clarkson to Audioslave to Faith Hill to Kanye West. In this town it is just so uncool to be mainstream, which I guess is why I try to surround myself with alternative friends. My friends all have something unique that I love about them, and I get to experience new things by hanging out with all of them. For the life of me, I will never understand what they get from me, other than a superior knowledge of shoes and handbags!

Anyway, go check out the Shim Shams! They rock!

They sound great. I have developed the disturbing habit of becoming very mainstream too. LOL

I'm pretty mainstream myself, with a streak of weirdness ;)

If it's uncool to be mainstream, and people strive to be cool, then aren't you being alternative by being uncool? Does that make sense? It did in my head.

That makes perfect sense to me.
